National

MOAA is the nation's largest and most influential association of military officers. It is an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan organization. With about 360,000 members from every branch of service - including active duty, retired, National Guard, Reserve, and former officers and their families - we are a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of military officers at every stage of their careers.

The association plays an active role in military personnel matters and especially proposed legislation affecting the career force, the retired community, and veterans of the uniformed services.

The Capitol Area Chapter, MOAA, was chartered on November 12, 1970. Col (Ret) Howard E. Derby, USAR, as Regional Representative of the Retired Officers Association made the presentation. Dues were set at $2 per year, plus a national fee of $8.

26 members attended the meeting, which included a dinner entree choice of turkey or Swiss Steak at a cost of $3.80 per person. Officers were elected and committees were appointed for Programs, Publicity, Membership, and Public Affairs.

Meetings were scheduled monthly during the fall, winter, and spring months. Program topics were alternated between those of military and general interest.

Membership included a generous mix of all US services, officer ranks, and spouses. All have always been welcome to attend the gatherings. The Chapter has experienced regular growth, currently with more than 200 members.

All member of US Uniformed Services are strongly encouraged to join and take an active role in the Chapter. With One Powerful Voice, a strong national defense and deserved entitlements can be maintained.
